I have been looking forward to Army of Two for a very long time. A game that is specifically geared towards co-op mode and actually designed with co-op as the intended version of play. This being said, I only played Army of Two in co-op mode and did not bother to play it solo. Lets get to it.
Gameplay
Very nice. Gameplay was smooth for the most part and what is expected from most FPS games. I do have some complaints however. The first is when it came to opening up some doors it was unclear if I need my partner and if I did need my partner where should we both be standing in order to make the door open. Secondly, where the fuck is my sprint button! How the hell can the developers make a game of this caliber and completely forget something as basic as sprint. Not only have I grown to like this feature in some other FPS….it has now become mandatory for all FPS in the future.
During the game you can buy upgrades at certain save points which is nice. A good improvement would be the ability to give some cash to your co-op buddy so he can get that upgrade. It would also be able to access the menu in order to re-equip some items that you have already purchased. I would understand the restriction not let you buy upgrades but at certain points.
Over all the gameplay was great I enjoyed it and i never found myself thinking that some of the buttons should have or could have been in a different place.
Graphics
Clearly inspired by Gears. That ok. Not so much the level design but the character design. It was a nice touch being able to change my mask mid mission and give my buddy, Mr. Johnson, something different to look at. Weapons effects were great and never really left me disappointed. The graphics of Army of Two are solid and I never experienced any frame rate issues at all.
Multiplayer
The game continued to play off the 2 player co-op. This is how multiplayer is designed. One team of 2 versus another. Throw a couple of NPC’s in the mix for good measure with some missions then you have multiplayer. The mission updates as you play and give you goals, ie. blow the computer, kill the leaders. You get the same mission as the other team and you both have to try to do the same thing. You can get to the mission before them of prevent them from doing it. Some mission there is a protect-defend mission. Admittedly I did not spend a ton of time for multiplayer and clearly this is where a couple of good friends could spend a lot of time having fun together. I did not play this game with a buddy and I had to play with who ever the match making system let me have. Some times I had a good teammate others times they sucked. The worst part was when I finally did find a good person to play with I was never given the option to keep playing with them. Of course I could have invited them to be my friend and go about it that way but I didn’t.
Story
I liked the story. I don’t want to give a lot away but I need to tell you something that really ate at me. The story line pits you against some evil doers and the whole story leads you to believe in the end you will get to put a bullet right between their eyes to finish the game. The cut scenes were excellent and made me want to keep playing in order to get to the next cut scene to find out the next plot twist. After battling over a couple of nights and several hours into the game we got to the end and only hoped to blow the hell out of them and we got a fucking cut scene and some credits. Nothing could have pissed me off more. We didn’t get to shoot one bullet at them. We didn’t get to plant one bomb. We were fighting some ordinary pukes and I was laying down, bleeding out hoping to get healed. Mr. Johnson was headed over to save me and he told me he was about dead as well. He capped the last grunt and cut scene. Two…count them two of the most evil guys in the game were snuffed without one trigger pull. Way to go. It was like going through all the pointless foreplay and then letting somebody else step in for the last 2 minutes
The ending could have been better. The game could have been longer. I could have had the sprint button.
